WHAT IS A SKIN CHECK & TREATMENT

Understanding Skin Care and Skin Cancer Procedures

Comprehensive skin examinations and treatments are available at Skin Check Toowoomba, to detect and manage premalignant and malignant skin conditions, including skin cancer. Early detection is key, which is why thorough examinations of moles, skin lesions, and suspicious areas are carried out with care. Treatments may include cryotherapy, biopsies, and surgical removal, ensuring patients receive effective management tailored to their individual needs.

Using the Latest Technology for a full range of services

We use the latest technology to deliver the most effective treatments, ensuring high-quality service in the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancers. Our approach combines advanced medical techniques with a commitment to patient care, giving you confidence in every step of your treatment journey.

At our Toowoomba clinic, we provide comprehensive skin checks and a full range of medical and clinical services. This includes skin cancer checks, biopsies, treatment of skin lesions, and a variety of minor procedures, all carried out with precision and care to support your ongoing skin health.

Non-Surgical Skin Cancer Treatments

When it comes to managing sun-damaged skin and treating pre-cancerous or early skin cancer lesions, a range of effective, evidence-based options are available. These treatments are designed to target both individual spots and larger areas of sun damage, helping to reduce risk while improving overall skin health. Depending on the type and extent of the condition, we may recommend topical creams, self-applied therapies, or in-clinic procedures to achieve the best outcome. These may include:

Fluorouracil Cream:

Topical treatment for extensive sun damage and clusters of sunspots (4-6 weeks treatment/reaction).

Imiquimod Cream:

Self-applied for superficial BCC or extensive sun damage/multiple sunspots (4-6 weeks treatment/reaction).

Cryotherapy: is a fast and effective treatment for pre-cancerous lesions such as sunspots (actinic keratoses), using liquid nitrogen to “freeze” and destroy abnormal cells while encouraging healthy skin to regrow. The procedure may cause brief stinging followed by redness, blistering, or crusting as the area heals. For patients with more extensive sun damage, cryotherapy can be complemented with field treatments using prescription gels or creams.

Your Skin Examination Explained...

Your Skin Doctor

Skin checks are performed by Dr Bakker, a highly experienced primary care skin doctor using advanced dermoscopy for precision and accuracy. Each appointment takes around 10–15 minutes and includes a full-body examination, covering the scalp, nails, palms, and soles. For spot checks and melanoma detection, we use high-resolution DermLite imaging at 10x magnification, allowing detailed assessment of moles and lesions. These images are stored securely for comparison at future visits, helping track any changes over time. If suspicious findings are detected, a skin biopsy or excisional biopsy can be carried out onsite, ensuring early diagnosis and effective treatment to support ongoing skin health.

The Skin Check Process

The skin check process is designed to be thorough while ensuring your privacy and comfort. Underwear remains on, and the skin is carefully examined using a magnifying lamp followed by dermatoscopy.

Any spots of interest are recorded, analysed, or removed if required. Limited check-ups are available, such as upper body only, exposed areas, or a single spot review, while genital areas are not routinely examined unless suspicious lesions are present. When appropriate, treatments such as biopsies or cryotherapy can be carried out during the consultation, with surgical excisions typically scheduled for a separate appointment to ensure optimal care.

Treatment and Surgical Management of Skin Conditions Glossary

Skin Biopsy: Tests suspicious lesions, rashes, or moles. Local anesthetic, thin shave, punch, or incision. Sample sent to pathologist.

Curettage/Shave Removal: For low-grade and surface skin cancers. Minimal tissue loss, virtually no post-operative pain. Simple dressing.

Skin Cancer Surgery (all types): If biopsy confirms cancer and excision is necessary, a local anesthetic is used to excise the lesion with a safety margin. Sutures (buried or surface) to close the wound. Dressing applied. Sutures may need removal 1 week later.

Melanoma Surgery (excluding lymph node surgery): Wider area excised under local anesthetic as day surgery. Sutures (buried or surface) to close the wound.

Skin Flap Repair Surgery: For complex closures and large skin cancers. Flap prepared from adjacent skin, rotated or advanced into position. Sutures (buried or surface) to close the wound.

Skin Grafts: If flaps are insufficient, skin is taken from another body area and grafted onto the wound. Surface sutures hold the graft. More complicated dressing.

Other Non-Skin Cancer Surgical Procedures:

○ Excision of benign skin lesions (lipomas, skin cysts, scalp cysts, benign moles, skin tags, age spots).

○ Shave removal of some benign skin lumps.

○ Diathermy (electrosurgical destruction) for some benign skin lesions.

○ Cryotherapy (freeze destruction) for some benign lesions
